Hip-to-gable loft combining antiques, natural light and a design in keeping with a 1930s home

A room with a view

In this 1930s countryside home, the owners wanted to turn their loft into a master suite that made the most of the open fields around them. Their brief was simple: a spacious bedroom, an en-suite and storage, with a design that brought in light but still worked with their traditional interiors and antique furniture.

Blending old and new

To capture the views, we fitted a full-width sliding door with a glass balcony, opening the room to the landscape and the morning sun. A new staircase in raw wood tied the loft into the rest of the house, and a stained-glass window became a striking feature from both inside and out. The en-suite was designed to feel bright and comfortable, with a skylight, walk-in shower and an antique sink that gave the room its own character.

Character in every detail

The client’s antiques shaped the look of the space. A brass bed frame, a French dresser with marble top and an ornate gold mirror gave the bedroom a traditional feel, while hidden wardrobes and sleek sliding doors added modern function. The bathroom carried the same mix, with onyx tiles paired with a gold-framed mirror and antique-style fittings. The result is a master suite that feels both classic and contemporary.

Keeping the character of the house

The challenge was to make sure the new loft looked like it had always belonged to the property. We used roof tiles to match the existing house, kept to light wooden floors and chose fittings that echoed the home’s original features. This balance allowed the new level to sit naturally within the countryside setting.

The result

The new master suite gave the owners a calm, spacious retreat with open views across the fields. When the property was later sold, the loft became a highlight for prospective buyers and added significant value to the home.

What the clients said

The clients told us the loft matched their vision and gave them a space that felt both comfortable and distinctive. It became the feature that helped set their home apart when they decided to sell.
